Trigger Point Massage Information
Since we have a lot of personal experience with how awesome trigger point massage can be for relieving pain, we want to let educate our site visitors and teach you what it's all about. First, we can't give medical information, this is just personal observation that we hope is helpful to you. Second, trigger point massage is considered by most to be in the alternative healing realm anyway. It is not so much science as a practical art that seems to make a LOT of people feel better.
The short definition of a trigger point is a knot of muscle fiber that is contracted all the time and not able to get enough oxygenated blood or expel it's waste. This makes the trigger point itself hurt, throws other muscles out of balance and possibly forms trigger points in them, weakens the muscle and makes your body hurt in all kinds of other places (this is called referred pain). Trigger points in your neck can make your hands hurt. Trigger points in your butt can make your back or legs hurt. the muscle will sometimes twitch also, especially when stimulated.
Trigger points can be caused by injuries, exercise, stress, all kinds of things. Once the knots form, not much really helps them except deactivating them.
Trigger point massage deactivates these muscle knots by putting pressure on them, which basically squeezes out the waste products and squeezes in blood and oxygen.
What this means is that trigger point massage can break up the cycle of chronic muscle stress and pain. If you have had chronic muscle tension then you know how painful and tiring it can be. Speaking for myself, trigger point bodywork can make these pains go away like nothing else that I have experienced.
Trigger point massage can be uncomfortable but most people describe it as hurting good. Pressure on the correct point can suddenly reproduce an aggravating pain that has been bugging you for months. You may experience temporary soreness or even slight bruising after it is over, but usually a dramatic reduction in pain follows quickly.
If you have had long standing muscle knots, multiple massages may be required to completely relieve pain. It is helpful to know that you can also learn to work most trigger points yourself, although it is a luxury to surrender to someone else that knows how to work them for you.
